Climbed St Helens on
August 18, 2012 and
September 8, 2012. Also in
2011.
Sunrise behind Mount Adams.
The view of Mount Hood as you come out of the forest. We timed it just right.
Got to the boulder field at 05:30 when it was just getting light. To dangerous
to go up Monitor Ridge on headlamps.
It was a perfect bluebird day at the summit. It rained the night before so there
wasn't the usual lava ash dust to deal with. Thick clouds were below us and followed
us up the mountain. They seemed to stall at around 1,500' below the summit. Great
views to the North and East. Completely socked in to the South. Headed out at 04:30
and was on the summit by 09:30. No wind at all and just starting to get hot. It was
in the 80's by the time we headed back down. As usual, we went through a LOT of water.
They issue 100 passes per day for this climb. Only around 50 signed in... many
bailed because of the threat of thunderstorms and lightning I presume. We saw
maybe 30 climbers. We were all alone until that last 1/2 mile when a few sprinters
passed us.
The view of Mount Adams from the top of Monitor Ridge.
The view of Mount Rainier from the summit. That's Spirit Lake in the foreground.
The view of the crater. The dome has gotten a lot bigger since we first came up
here. There were constant, very loud rock slides and the hissing of snow falling
on the hot, steaming rocks. You would definitely not want to attempt this climb
from Johnstone Observatory!
Mount Rainier. That's not crap on the lens... it's thin, whispy clouds all over
the place up here.
The view back down Monitor Ridge. Needless to say, I was concerned about
navigation since people getting lost in white-outs up here is fairly common.
Fired up the GPS, got out the compass and crossed my fingers.....
Made it back down (obviously). I would have enjoyed seeing the view after she took
this off. Boobholders are the most stupid thing ever invented. Bra burning was the
only part of the women's lubrication movement that I liked.
