This is a nice early Spring loop ride when the road to Lava Canyon is still closed
due to snow. Sometimes you can get as far as
Marble Mountain.
For planning purposes, the road from Marble Mountain to Lava Canyon is rarely open
before the second week in June.
Curley Creek Bypass has been opened for a week or two. The road from Carson to Cougar
is 100% snow-free with almost no gravel on the roadway.
The Cougar Loop has been a regular run for us several times a year for decades.
We always stop at the Lone Fir in Cougar for lunch but the long time owner sold the
place in 2014. The new owners have done everything they can to convert a successful
business into a place that no one would want to patronize. Why is anyone's guess.
So I decided to stop at the Cougar Bar and Grill which is across the street from the
Lone Fir. I've eaten there a few times in the way distant past... food was "ok"...
but the place was a dump and you spent your entire time there swatting flies.
So decided to give the Cougar Bar and Grill a fresh look now that going to the
Lone Fir is no longer an option. Worst service ever! After waiting over ten minutes
and still no menu, decided to leave. Several people who came in after we did were
greeted by a waitress and given menus... figured they just weren't all that interested
in our business...
